Georgia Canning on the joy of retro-futurism
The British-Australian designer Georgia Canning talks to CR about techy folklore, creating new worlds and her lifelong obsession with emerging software. Canning is part of our New Talent showcase for 2024
Georgia Canning is “super anti” Swiss design and its rigid approach. “I push against it,” muses the art director and graphic designer on her distinctive vision. “I love it when it feels retro-futuristic … folklore and medieval references in a techy space. I reference video games a lot.”
Playing around with Photoshop from the age of 13, Canning got into the “digital stuff” early on, which gave her a taste for a career working in something along those lines. “But I could never have been more specific about what it has become,” she says in hindsight. “I didn’t even know it existed because it didn’t when I was younger.”
Canning was born in the UK but grew up in Australia and had to initially postpone honing her craft in education when arriving back in London, thanks to the cost of international student fees. She kept busy interning at fashion magazines while simultaneously working in a pub. “I had my first internship at Dazed when I was 18, which is crazy to think about now,” she reflects.
