Saoirse Ronan and Mike Mills unite for new Talking Heads video
Created to mark 50 years since Talking Heads’ first gig, Mills directs Ronan in a jittery new promo for the band’s seminal song Psycho Killer
The video tracks Ronan over a series of days, getting up, going to work, hanging out with her partner, and slowly unravelling. The repetitive beats of Psycho Killer – originally released in 1977 but sounding as fresh and glorious as if it were created yesterday – provide the perfect soundtrack and give the scenes a twitchy foreboding, though Ronan’s emotional highs and lows go largely unnoticed by those around her.
Mike Mills – director of movies including Thumbsucker, Beautiful Losers, 20th Century Women, C’mon C’mon and numerous music videos – has often referenced Talking Heads in his work so seemed a natural choice to direct. He still had to submit a treatment and then discuss it with the band on Zoom though, an experience he told Variety was “the most nerve-racking thing for me”.
But it clearly worked out, with the band releasing a statement with the video saying, “This video makes the song better – We LOVE what this video is NOT – it’s not literal, creepy, bloody, physically violent or obvious.”
Talking Heads’ first gig was opening for The Ramones at CBGB in New York on June 5, 1975 and the new video marks the latest celebration of the band’s enduring influence and importance.
Their time together was wrought with acrimony and they haven’t played together live since 1984 (officially splitting in 1991), though regrouped in 2023 to do press promoting the 40th anniversary of their film Stop Making Sense. Releases such as the new Psycho Killer video will no doubt leave fans salivating for a reunion but going by recent statements by the band, this remains unlikely.
