Turf: from football pitch to creative pitch

Southampton FC’s in-house creative studio, Turf, is opening up its services to external brands. We explore what benefit this brings to both club and clients

Most football clubs in the top tiers of English football have their own creative departments, but what makes Southampton FC’s in-house studio, Turf, a unique proposition is the fact that it is now taking on other clients, whether or not they’re affiliated with the club in any way.

Even if you didn’t know that Turf was born out of Southampton FC, there are a few peculiarities that give away the fact it’s not your average studio. For starters, everyone works to the rhythm of football. “I’ve been in the club for two seasons,” says creative and brand lead Ash Kirby.

That’s not to say he’s part of the squad. It’s just that whether you’re on the pitch or in the studio, “we work in seasons”. There’s also the fact he and his team work in St Mary’s stadium, the club’s home ground. “The pitch is, like, ten feet away from where we are.”
