Tomoro Kinoshita on creating microworlds

Self-taught digital artist Tomoro Kinoshita draws on the science of entomology to create his 3D art. As part of our New Talent showcase for 2024, he discusses his unique approach to worldbuilding and how he’s broadening his practice through VR

Looking at Tomoro Kinoshita’s work feels as though you’re staring through a microscope at another world altogether. The Osaka-based digital artist creates colourful, intricate, 3D scenes inhabited by a variety of strange creatures and life forms that co-exist peacefully in their microcosms.

Kinoshita puts his distinctive style down to a lifelong fascination with entomology. While other kids his age were building worlds through drawing or playing with toys, he spent much of his childhood making insect specimens. “I love insects and plants, so I still take my loupe to the park and observe natural elements such as moss and bark,” he tells CR.
