Charli XCX wins best video at UK MVAs 2024
The music video for 360, directed by Aidan Zamiri, picked up the top prize, while director of the year went to Aube Perrie
Brat girl summer may be over, but Charli XCX season continues with a win at this year’s UK Music Video Awards. The video for her song 360 triumphed in the best UK pop video category and also picked up the ultimate gong, best music video of the year.
Written and directed by Aidan Zamiri, it features cameos by a group of ‘hot internet girls’ and a heavy dose of knowing humour. Object and Animal, which Zamiri works with, was also named best production company.
Meanwhile Aube Perrie was named director of the year for the second year in a row, having followed up 2023 promos for Harry Styles and The Hives with a run of music videos for RM (a member of K-pop sensation BTS) and Fontaines DC this year.
Perrie’s collaborators also scooped awards. Studio Augmenta, who worked with Perrie on the wonderfully bizarre music video for RM’s Lost, was named best production designer, while Gwen Ghelid earned the best editor award for her work on Angel of My Dreams by former Little Mix member Jade.
Another Fontaines DC project – the video for Here’s the Thing – was recognised at the awards with Lucy James’ win for best styling, illustrating a strong album campaign from the Irish group.
The best animation in a video comes with an unusually long list of winners thanks to director Raman Djafari commissioning 15 animators and illustrators to work on the video for Coldplay’s Feelslikeimfallinginlove.
As always, the awards also recognised up-an-coming talent, with newcomer awards going to directors Ben Harris, Alex Acy, Billy King, and Baby; cinematographer Angelo Marques; colourist Alex O’Brien; and editor Ferina. Meanwhile, the best new director prize went to brothers Will and Ed Reid, better known by their moniker The Reids.
