Lawrence Slater on the value of projects that give back

Having worked with household name brands ranging from the BBC to Converse, in his latest project the illustrator is giving flyers for small businesses in his local area a well-deserved glow up

Lawrence Slater’s illustrations are charmingly innocent. Typically drawn using simple shapes and block colours, his stripped back approach to his craft has attracted clients including Ace & Tate, Die Zeitgeist and Urban Oufitters since he first started out in 2014. “I think I’ve worked out a way to draw simply that works for me,” he tells CR.

“I like to draw quite fast, at least at first as I think then the drawing tends to look more interesting and less restricted, and sometimes I refine it after. Over the years, I guess it’s just got a bit more considered, I don’t think it’s changed a great deal, just a bit better.”

The London-based illustrator and animator balances his practice alongside his day job as an art director at advertising agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, where he currently works, Wonderhood and the &Partnership “It’s different to drawing but both are great,” he says. “Also, both feed into each other. I can sketch mock-ups at work pretty fast, and working in advertising has definitely helped my ideas and communication when making drawings.”
