Zongbo Jiang: activism with a difference

Visual artist Zongbo Jiang renders up fantastical imagery to address our very real world problems and reach new audiences

If you ever wondered what Hieronymus Bosch could have created if he lived in the time of graphic design and 3D modelling, look no further than Zongbo Jiang. Disconcerted by how the world is progressing, the Chinese visual activist renders up fantastical digital worlds that foretell the future of our planet and draw attention to its challenges – just as Bosch’s triptychs predicted the consequences of an immoral Christian life.

Jiang’s eyes were permanently opened after he binged on some documentary films, namely The Social Dilemma, which explored the devastating human impact of social networking, and Earthlings, an investigation into the use of animals as pets, food, clothing, entertainment and scientific research.

As the artist consumed the documentaries, “I felt sad,” he says. “It made me want to do something about it.” He reflected on how he could impart this knowledge to younger generations who receive more input online. “If this is how I receive information, maybe I could create my own way of sharing that information,” he says. “I wanted to use visual language to open conversations.”
